The Security Situation in Liberia is Fragile
U.N. envoy to Liberia cautions
The United Nations envoy to Liberia cautioned today that the West
African country’s steady and impressive rebound from decades of
civil strife was tempered by the mood of its citizens, who were leery
of the Government’s ability or willingness to guarantee the rule of law
and often resorted to mob violence to accomplish what fractured
judicial and administrative institutions could not.

Liberians everywhere (TPS/Ghana): going back
home or staying illegally?
Clarence Moniba
Just six days ago, I talked about our struggling refugees in Ghana
who now face deportation, but how soon we forget…just six months
ago, many Liberians here in the United States were weeks away
from the same fate. Liberians were told that the U.S had done all it
could and that it was time to return home.

Côte d'Ivoire: UN Mission Welcomes Unveiling
of Presidential Poll Date
The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Côte d'Ivoire
(UNOCI) today welcomed the announcement that the country's
much delayed presidential elections will now be held on 30
November this year.
The publication of the poll date "is one of the greatest achievements
in the Ivorian peace process since the outbreak of the crisis more
than four years ago," UNOCI said in a press release issued in
Abidjan.

Seyba Traoré, aged 11, and his brother Moumini, 9, set out each
morning with big bags slung over their shoulders to sort through the
capital's many rubbish dumps in search of scrap metal - car or
motorbike parts, old lamps, curtain-rods - any old iron objects will
do.
They sell on their haul each afternoon at 12 US cents per kilogram to
a buyer they know only as Hamdallaye.

Guinea: End of Fuel Subsidy Increases Economic
Woes
The day after Guinea's powerful trade unions put on hold a general
strike aimed at pushing the government to improve living conditions,
Guineans woke up to find the government had ended subsidies on
diesel, gasoline and oil.
The price of a litre of petrol rose by more than 60 percent, from
US$0.99 to $1.62, overnight. The cost of fuel at pumps will now rise
and fall in line with international petrol prices, within a 4 percent
margin.

A 16-year-old refugee risked illegal entry into the U.S. to escape
Sierra Leone. Once here, his hardship continued, culminating in his
beating and rape by a cellmate at a jail in Philadelphia.
AS THE CARGO ship docked at a port near New York City,
16-year-old Mohamed Fornah sat hidden inside a shipping
container, alone and scared. He had fled Sierra Leone with no
money, clothes or possessions. All he carried was the guilt of fleeing
his homeland without his three sisters who were kidnapped by
diamond-hungry rebels.
Life had not been kind to him. When he was little, rebels killed his
parents. When he was a teen, they raped his sisters, then stabbed
him, leaving him for dead.

In view of the recent meeting I like to express my position with
respect to what went on.  On Sunday, April 13, 2008 I was called
to a meeting allegedly by the Imam, when I got there the meeting was
not at the Imam house nor was the Imam there.  I immediately asked
for the other people whom I felt should have been there.  I was told
they will be coming as they were also invited however the meeting
started without everyone else being present. As you know I have
greater interest in search of meeting as I have been advocating for
unity in our community.  At the end of the meeting I was chosen to
head an interim body for 2 months with the responsibility to conduct
an election.  I felt that this was a calling and I accepted it.
Thereafter, I tried to reach everyone including the Elderly to help in
this regard but I was not getting the corporation I want.
